One of my dad’s recipes. This is a traditional Italian Christmas Eve dessert.
Very sweat and great with Espresso.
4 | cups flour | 4 | teaspoons baking powder
1/2 | cup sugar | 1/3 | pound butter, soft
4 | eggs | 3 | tablespoons milk
1 | teaspoon of one of the following extracts
honey | |||||
vanilla extract | confectioners sprinkles, (The hard round ones) |
||||
teaspoon lemon extract
teaspoon orange extract | maple syrup
teaspoon rum extract |
Make a well in the flour. Add remaining ingredients (except honey (syrup) & sprinkles). Mix with fork or hands until thoroughly blended and dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl to form a rough ball. Knead on floured board until smooth and glossy (about 10 minutes). Refrigerate at least 1 hour. Shape dough into small balls. Heat oil to 350 degrees. Fry a few balls at a time until golden brown. Drain. (you can bake the balls instead of frying) Shape fried balls into a cone. Heat honey (mixed with maple syrup if used). Pour hot honey over balls. Add Sprinkles. Mix.
